Results of my poll about payment options

At the end of March I asked my friends on facebook and here for participation in my poll about preferred forms of payment to use at local venues like craft shows etc.

I would like to thank everyone, who took a moment and shared their opinion. And below are results of my poll.

The choices available and percentage of voters for each category:

  • credit card: 58%
  • cash: 42%
  • check: 0%

To give you a little bit behind the scene preview- for a moment payment by credit card was dominating the poll and at the last moment few voters changed the final look to very balanced level between bank cards and cash. I don’t think it is surprising to anyone, that check doesn’t have any fans. I think fewer and fewer of us likes to use it. It’s too much hassle, writing it down and than it takes few days for processing. It seems like to much of a process. Cards and cash are almost instant, quick and effortless.

Now looking at the results listed above I wanted to share my observation from the point of view of the seller on local venues.

Please, do not think, that my opinion is in any way full representation of the industry. By any means it is just my personal observation.

I have noticed since the first show I have done, that taking cards as option for payments is very important. Some people are still willing to pull cash out or write a check, but even most of those customers in case if they could use they card for payment- they would much more prefer do to so. Also- I had couple of situations, where there was an ATM at the location of the show and… well- most shoppers, who were intending on getting some cash from ATM never got to do it.  Which I fully understand, as there is a lot of distraction and excitement and maybe seller in booth next to me had product they really liked too and that seller accepted credit cards for payment, so they just went with that purchase instead.

Out of the shows I had participated in- at the last one I finally was able to accept credit cards as well.

83% of total amount in sales I made was processed as credit card payment and only 17% was paid by cash. No checks of course.
I am very happy I have decided to sign up for the service which allowed me to offer option to pay by card. I know for sure, that couple of my customers at that show gave me big smile of relief when they saw the sign announcing option of credit card payments.

The later statistic just makes point by itself.  No extra explanation needed.

  1. Interesting poll, I use my credit card for most things and have noticed that a lot of people like to use them when purchasing items too.

    • Kathryn, thank you so much for your comment. I think we all use credit cards more and more often. It's just so much more convenient! :)
