How photographers work?

Recently interesting infographic about how the job of photographer looks like has been circulating on facebook. The data for the two charts below has been released by International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers couple of years ago and it seems that from time to time it comes back to us shared via different sites or social media.

Very true indeed, tells a bit more about how everyone perceives what photographers do against how their work looks like in reality.

The Secret Life of Wedding Photographer www.ispwp.com

I am willing to say that almost any job could be described by the views of those who imagine what does it take to do it and by those who actually have to do it on a daily basis. Don’t you think? :)

The last day to place order is 23rd of October and unfortunately at this point I am not able to specify the reinstating date.
Here on the blog  I will keep you posted about any news and through this site I can be contacted in case of any questions, special requests or prints needing emergencies :)

My portfolio page is going to be opened with no interruptions and BBACK15 coupon code can be used until further notice.

Too hot for outdoors show

After latest show I came up with this opinion, that heat doesn’t help with sales of handcrafts and art, and I mean outdoor sales.
It seems that attention span is shorter,  not as much of standing & chatting going on. More of a “walking through” attitude among shoppers.
Is it just me, that got that feeling?

Well, that opinion is only based on the recent show I have participated in. It was 95F-or something like that.
I know it was way to hot to just hang out, take a walk etc.  I was sweating, just by standing under my tent- didn’t need to move, and if I moved around- well you can only imagine!
Maybe adding the fact that humidity was unbearably high too had something to do with overall feeling as well?
And at the end- big black cloud and heave wind motivated us to very, very quickly fold up, pack up and go!

Of course- I should mention, that it might be just me and my personal experience.
I can imagine that lemonade stand is best type of outdoor business you can have when it’s hot!

I am curious about experience other handmade artists are having during outdoor summer shows in the South?

Finally, after long time spent on browsing and searching, and trying to find inspiration for new design for my website I was able to find something, that matched my expectations of clean and rather simple look.

I found it while browsing the Theme Forest website. I have always liked browsing through that site, there is always something nice I can find.
This time I came across this design, which you can see currently on my page!

Results of my poll about payment options

At the end of March I asked my friends on facebook and here for participation in my poll about preferred forms of payment to use at local venues like craft shows etc.

I would like to thank everyone, who took a moment and shared their opinion. And below are results of my poll.

The choices available and percentage of voters for each category:

  • credit card: 58%
  • cash: 42%
  • check: 0%

To give you a little bit behind the scene preview- for a moment payment by credit card was dominating the poll and at the last moment few voters changed the final look to very balanced level between bank cards and cash. I don’t think it is surprising to anyone, that check doesn’t have any fans. I think fewer and fewer of us likes to use it. It’s too much hassle, writing it down and than it takes few days for processing. It seems like to much of a process. Cards and cash are almost instant, quick and effortless.

Now looking at the results listed above I wanted to share my observation from the point of view of the seller on local venues.

Please, do not think, that my opinion is in any way full representation of the industry. By any means it is just my personal observation.

I have noticed since the first show I have done, that taking cards as option for payments is very important. Some people are still willing to pull cash out or write a check, but even most of those customers in case if they could use they card for payment- they would much more prefer do to so. Also- I had couple of situations, where there was an ATM at the location of the show and… well- most shoppers, who were intending on getting some cash from ATM never got to do it.  Which I fully understand, as there is a lot of distraction and excitement and maybe seller in booth next to me had product they really liked too and that seller accepted credit cards for payment, so they just went with that purchase instead.

Out of the shows I had participated in- at the last one I finally was able to accept credit cards as well.

83% of total amount in sales I made was processed as credit card payment and only 17% was paid by cash. No checks of course.
I am very happy I have decided to sign up for the service which allowed me to offer option to pay by card. I know for sure, that couple of my customers at that show gave me big smile of relief when they saw the sign announcing option of credit card payments.

The later statistic just makes point by itself.  No extra explanation needed.

Thank you for coming to DAW

Finally everything is organized and filed away.
And the more I do it (the shows)- the more I seem to realize, that I much more prefer the part of getting ready for the show, rather that putting leftover inventory back into their storage space, putting supplies away etc.

There is an idea in my head about why preparation to the show can be more exciting. It’s that part of not really knowing who is going to come and comment on your work and who will enjoy it, so they will want to hang it at home or office for decorative purposes. It’s the part of guessing, what inventory would be most representative of my work and at the same time- will attract customers?

JoannasFoto.com - Durham Art Walk, April 2010

The above photograph shows part of my display from DAW ( Durham Art Walk).

Now, to explain my title- this was supposed to be post written to thank all of you, who were able to come to Durham and participate in Art Walk.
I know from few of you, that the event being located throughout the downtown part of city added a little bit confusion, but maybe also some excitement, like adventure of finding undiscovered sites? :)

Along with few other artists I had my stand at one of the lobby of American Tobacco Campus. JoannasFoto.com : American Tobacco Campus, Durham NCWe had lots of people coming and going through the lobby. Some of them not realizing that there is an art event going on. But I think for most of them it was really nice surprise.

So- THANK YOU very much for stopping by, for chatting and sharing your opinions. I loved your excitement and I loved how you reacted to my work. I consider photography to be one of those artistic mediums, that can very easily become personal thanks to what it presents and I have noticed that type of reaction so often. I am very thankful and grateful for that, it makes me as a creator and an artist more aware of my work and gives me satisfaction of doing something, that is being appreciated.

I wanted to THANK sweet clerks at Saladelia, the little cafe located just next to my stand. The coffee was great and the smell of each fresh brew throughout both days was really awesome! Loved it! I hope you came to my blog and can read it- I really appreciate you being so nice  to me!

This was my third show of this type. At the same time third different experience. And each of them adds to my personal list of different things to do, when getting ready for the next one. One day I need to write down my observations and post it here!
